I’ve read some reviews saying the characters are lacking. It’s a system that makes sense and has those beautiful flaws we all love. The magic system Nix creates is amazing, it’s certainly one of my favourite aspects of the series. The world is very real, you can easily imagine yourself wandering around the Old Kingdom. I’ve read Sabriel at least 4 or 5 times since my early teens and I still love it. Yes, I read them out of order, but for the first two books in the series, it really doesn’t matter. The first time I read Sabriel was after I read the second book, Lirael. This is one of my all-time favourite series. With threats on all sides and only each other to trust, the three must travel deep into the Old Kingdom, toward a battle that will pit them against the true forces of life and death, and bring Sabriel face-to-face with her own hidden destiny. Though her journey begins alone, she soon finds companions: Mogget, whose seemingly harmless feline form hides a powerful and perhaps malevolent spirit and Touchstone, a young Charter Mage long imprisoned by magic, now free in body but still trapped by painful memories. But now her father, the Mage Abhorsen, is missing, and to find him Sabriel must cross back into that world. Sabriel (The Old Kingdom #1, Abhorsen #1)Įver since she was a tiny child, Sabriel has lived outside the walls of the Old Kingdom, away from the random power of Free Magic, and away from the Dead who won’t stay dead.
